In her album, “Not Forgotten,” Julie Neway utilizes a restored legacy synthesizer to explore the emotional evolution of a friendship. The collection of seven tracks begins by capturing the initial hope of finding a companion and the subsequent desire for mutual validation. As the track list progresses, the music celebrates the shared experiences and gratitude that define a deep bond. However, the narrative shifts toward grief and loss when the friend eventually moves away. The album ultimately concludes with a hopeful reflection on the possibility of forming new connections in the future. The pieces were originally composed in the period from 1996 to 2004.
The progression of these seven songs is like the life cycle of a garden; it begins with the optimistic planting of a seed (“Thinking of You”), survives the harsh weather of growth (“Just Say It” and “Yes”), flourish in the sunlight of gratitude (“Thanks” and “Threads”), and eventually settles into the quiet, reflective dormancy of winter (“Bye” and “Tomorrow”) to prepare for a new season. I do love the progression, the complete circle of friendship from an anticipation of friendship to future hope of other friendships.
You are to be commended for the innovation and ingenuity and creativity of your musical compositions and for being able to link the nuances of the music to each freind’s being! This project itself is unique.
Awesome. Thank you.
For studying, 2 and 3 a re my favs. I like 5 and 7 for background music.
I listened to the album. It was enjoyable and I could sense the different emotions being expressed.
Before listening I was thinking about the many sad goodbyes of friends who have died or who I’ll likely never see again…half way through with the minor tones I could related the music to my feelings of bittersweetness.
Tomorrow was PERFECT bitter-sweetness which reflects my mood as an elder when I practice life review and all the goodbyes over the years, especially felt when you changed keys half way through….
‘Not Forgotten’ becomes a part of the indelible oeuvre of Julie’s compositions; wrapping around the psyche in fragments of synthesis and integration. Each piece adds to the other, and the whole soundscape becomes a comforting cloak of multifaceted hue.
To choose a favorite seems impossible! What I felt and appreciated was the essence and evolution of grief journey, which is never ending.
Very light and playful.
Easy listening-well done.
“Tomorrow” is beautiful. Astoundingly beautiful. I have never heard anything like this. I love this.
Congratulations. It sounds very interesting…I read the interesting notes…
What a beautiful subject to express musically.
Track 3 “Yes.” It made me think that it would be a perfect song to play during the credits after a Feel Good movie.
“Tomorrow” is a very charming little track, nice addition of strings, plus a nice modulation a little further in. Good popular harmonies, this would get a good general response in my opinion.
I’m really loving these! They are all great background music, for life…uplifting most of them, lots of emotion. You’ve done a really great job on these.
Just listened to Threads…It’s my favorite so far…the chording of the thirds brought memories of friendships and brought tears to my eyes. The main instrument immediately reminded me of an accordion and my childhood listening to Polkas. Even though it wasn’t a polka, it was kind of similar and brought back some happy memories.
“Tomorrow.” Beautiful piece and I love the ending!
“Yes”…sunlight of gratitide.
I think I like #5 Threads the best!
Very nice. You are a woman of many talents.
“Thinking of You,” “Thanks” and “Bye” seemed to stand out for me…no specific reasons, just the feelings I experienced.
I liked the pace of “Thinking of You.” “Just Say It” was engaging. “Tomorrow” is whimsical.
This was an enjoyable 15 minutes.
Tomorrow hopefulness for a new season.
Thank you for sharing your music with us. We thoroughly enjoyed our candle lit dinners while listening. We are not experts in the field and have no musical education, but this is how your music made us feel:
#1 – Thinking of You: contemplative, motivating tempo, real upbeat, it made us feel positive – summer-like.
#2 – Just Say It: felt like we were walking in a rain forest, we found ourselves swaying in our chairs, a bit mysterious, toward the end we felt like we were drifting off to sea.
#3 – Yes: we got instantly calm, a gentleness came from it then uplifting, it felt like it had a soul, it ended abruptly…and we wanted more.
#4 – Thanks: very sultry opening, we felt like we were in Spain or Greece, we felt like this piece could be in a movie. We saw it in our minds as we listened.
#5 – Threads: we felt like we could be walking hand in hand on a cobblestone street, we saw ourselves having lunch in a sidewalk cantina.
#6 – Bye: nicely and gently lifts the spirits, felt like we wanted to dance to this, twirling in certain spots, then we saw a stream running over rocks in the xylophone parts. This was a favorite.
#7 – Tomorrow: a gentle wave rhythm, we felt like we had a soft wind pushing us in the sailboat with calm waters. It reminded of something one can’t quite put a finger on…still thinking about it.
Oh, awesome!!! I am so happy you’ve been inspired to keep the creative juices flowing, and the spring joy to others… I could hear the joy in the first two tracks.
Overall, I think the music reflects the journey through grief, although not in a linear fashion. Great album and it is wonderful that your music is so cathartic. Here are some of my thoughts:
“Thinking of You” struck me as memories of the playful, and lighthearted moments or general mood of a relationship. Why? The music captured the questioning, confused, and hurt similar to the phase of confrontation. Even without the title, I think I would have felt this.
“Yes”…the idea of steps to acceptance, beginning of integration, more hopeful, purposeful.
“Thanks”…reflective, acknowledging, almost happy, mix of confrontation and integration.
“Threads”…much more integrative, peace, happiness.
“Bye”…even though Bye is often thought to be sad, this felt like skipping, sunshine, freedom.
“Tomorrow”…a fully integrated experience. Not Forgotten, but embraced in fullness.
To know that there is an intended arc of progression contained within the tracks is interesting, and useful to know Some of the things you referred to I could not hear as clearly in the music as the text seems to suggest
In the end, I preferred to listen to the tracks purely for the sake of their musical values, rather than for any programmatic quality. Maybe that is because that is how I relate to music, on a mainly abstract level: ultimately I can’t really say, music is so subjective.
To me, the tracks exist on a relatively similar continuum of stylistic continuity. That is their strength, they are consistent and blend together as a whole, I would say. Somewhat like a suite or partita.
Overall, I think they are stylish, and well-conceived within their genre. The production values are good, and it is clear you have put a great deal of thought into their conception and realisation.
I have no doubt the majority of people will get a good deal of pleasure from listening to these tracks, they are very accessible, certainly for those used to this style of music, but also more widely.
Enjoyed listening to your tracks, very well-devised and produced, good balancing in the tracks. Here are my observations:
Thinking of you- nice driving rhythm, good harmonic changes; syncopated melody featured
Just say it- nice minor modal harmony; again good steady rhythm, well made bass line; nice use of castanets!
Yes- nice use of marimba sounds in intro; quite a romantic-sounding track; again a good bass line underpins proceedings. Using the flat 7 chord is effective.
Thanks- nice slow groove, with excellent percussion; somehow reflective of a European pop style; good harmonic changes.
Threads- nice clarinet-type melody, well-structured; good accompaniment; sort of reminiscent of European folk style, even a bit Greek!
Bye- featuring vibraphone sounds, very effective interaction with what sounds like a guitar sample, underpinned by rhythm guitar; then use of strings to fill out the melody is excellent orchestration; nice to have a good 3-time section also! Switches between minor and major effective too.
Tomorrow- classic feel to this track with excellent melody and harmony changes underneath; is proving quite difficult to pin down the time signature!
I think on balance track 4 is my favourite, it’s quite sophisticated and very listenable!
First and foremost I wish to say CONGRATULATIONS! This represents an enormous amount of work and huge talent in many forms. There were so many single note/chord moments or quick bursts of something new/interesting that I’d enjoy commenting on that I’d almost have to be sitting beside you to outline them all. Most of all I enjoyed the variety—in sounds, rhythms, instrumentation. The write-up was clear and concise.
1. Thinking of you : Lively, upbeat, bouncy, full of promise. Counter melodies work really nicely. Enjoy a minor chord now and then for interest-nice. Drumbrush is pleasant.
2. Just say It: Interesting intro—yearning theme, slightly moody. Strong ending with full sounds create a hopeful vibe, like a big yearning beginning to be fulfilled.
3. Yes: really nice intro with lots of dynamic instrument interest. dreamy, satisfied, happy.
4. Thanks: Great intro, syncopated nicely. I enjoyed what I heard as a sort of Mediterranean feel, rhythm, tempo. Pan flute a nice addition. I like the last note—good ending.
5. Threads: I love the clarinet sound, beautiful melody. Enjoy the flute sounds, then horns, then oboe or clarinet.
6. Bye: The opening guitar strums are a nice addition. Lovely lyrical quality. Nice xylophone dancing—call and answer. really delightful.
7. Tomorrow: This feels a bit melancholy, though nice and lyrical.
Just finished listening and I love it! Each piece really has a different mood that reflects the story. I particularly like the 2nd one and the 7th one. The 2nd one evoked for me a dance scene out of a Jane Austen novel, and the last one is so beautifully wistful. Nice work and thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks for sharing your music . I enjoyed # 5 best.
I took a break this afternoon to listen to these pieces and enjoyed them all, especially the varied instrumentation which was very creative. I liked the first piece best, as I did find its tone and rhythm optimistic. Thanks for sharing.
